Returning Students

Considering returning to SDSU to complete your degree? Whether a student has been out of attendance for a few semesters or years, we can help.

Readmission considerations are based on a variety of factors. It is important for students interested in returning to determine what readmission category they fall into. If you are interested in returning, please fill out the Readmission Screening Questionnaire, and our readmission advisor will review your information and reach back out to you to discuss your options.

Know Your Academic Standing

It is important for students to know their academic standing when deciding to return to SDSU. The requirements needed to return will vary based on a student's standing.

  • If a student had a cumulative and SDSU GPA of 2.0+, they are in good standing, academically eligible to apply through admissions to return.
  • Student’s eligibility to return and to register for courses may be impacted by non-academic factors, such as holds from your prior enrollment.

Be sure to review the GPA requirements associated with the declared major when re-applying.

  • Students are placed on academic notice at the end of the semester when their SDSU GPA and/or cumulative GPA is less than 2.0 (less than a "C" average).

We understand that certain students may have faced challenging circumstances that hindered their ability to meet academic expectations. If you experienced such difficulties during your time in school, we can explore potential options for improving your grades during those periods.

Undergraduate Academic Status: Academic Notice and Disqualification

  • Students who did not meet academic standards while on academic notice:
    • First-year (29 units or less) will be academically disqualified if their SDSU or cumulative GPA is below a 1.50
    • Sophomore (30-59 units) will be academically disqualified if their SDSU or cumulative GPA is below a 1.70
    • Junior (60-89 units) will be academically disqualified if their SDSU or cumulative GPA is below a 1.85
    • Senior (90 units or higher) will be academically disqualified if their SDSU or cumulative GPA is below a 1.95
    • 2nd Baccalaureate (0+ units) will be academically disqualified if their SDSU or cumulative GPA is below a 1.95
  • If a student is disqualified, they are no longer a student at SDSU and cannot enroll in SDSU classes, or classes through SDSU Global Campus, for a minimum of one year.
  • To return to SDSU after a year, the student must reapply to the University and be subject to the policy and admission standards in effect at the time of their application.

Things Students Looking to Return Can Do Now
